Repairing a back tooth without metal

Back teeth take the heaviest load in the mouth, which is why they were traditionally restored in metal.

Modern composite bonds directly to the remaining tooth rather than being held in place by its shape alone, so less healthy tooth has to be cut away to hold the restoration. The result carries the load and looks like the tooth it replaced.
