Restoring the biting surface

The biting surface of a molar is a landscape of cusps and grooves, and rebuilding it is not simply a matter of filling a hole.
The restored surface has to meet the opposing tooth the way the original did. Get that wrong and the patient feels it immediately — the bite catches, or the tooth becomes sensitive under pressure.
